What Is Dog Challenge Cards?

Dog Challenge Cards is a printable card game for dog owners who want to make training fun. Players draw cards, attempt the challenge with their dog, and earn points. Works solo as a daily training game, or competitively with friends and their dogs at a park or playdate. All 60 challenges use positive reinforcement only — no punishment, no dangerous stunts — just tail-wagging good times.

Perfect for: family game nights with the dog, puppy training parties, dog park meetups, birthday parties for dog lovers, and gifts for dog-obsessed friends. Suitable for all breeds, ages, and experience levels.

📋 Game Rules
Three ways to play — pick what fits your pack!

🧍 Single-Player Mode

  • Shuffle all 60 cards into one deck, or separate by difficulty.
  • Set a goal: complete 10 cards in one session.
  • Draw a card and read the challenge aloud.
  • Follow the time limit shown on the card.
  • Mark cards as Pass or Skip on your score sheet.
  • Earn the points listed. Try to beat your own high score!
  • Track progress over days/weeks as your dog improves.
  • Bonus: complete all 20 Easy cards in one session for a "Paw Star" bonus of +5 pts.

👨‍👩‍👧 Multiplayer Mode

  • 2–6 players, each with their own dog.
  • Shuffle the deck. Place it face-down in the center.
  • Players take turns drawing a card (clockwise).
  • All players watch and vote: Pass (thumbs up) or No Pass (thumbs down). Majority rules.
  • Successful player earns the card's point value.
  • Play until the deck runs out or all players reach 20 cards drawn.
  • Highest score wins! Award a treat for the dog with the most completions too.
  • Optional: players may swap a drawn card once per round (Wild Swap rule).

🏆 Tournament Mode

  • Requires 4+ players and at least 3 rounds.
  • Round 1: Easy cards only. All players draw 5 cards each.
  • Round 2: Medium cards only. All players draw 4 cards.
  • Round 3: Hard cards only. All players draw 3 cards.
  • Bonus round: Bonus cards — first player to draw AND complete wins double points.
  • Tally all points from all rounds. Highest total wins the tournament.
  • Award 2nd and 3rd place ribbons too — every dog deserves a prize!

⚡ Tie-Breaker Rules

  • First tie-break: each tied player draws one Hard card. Successful completion wins.
  • Second tie-break: both attempt the same Bonus card simultaneously. Fastest completion wins.
  • Still tied? Sit-Stay contest — whose dog holds a sit-stay the longest wins!
  • If still tied after all three: declare a double winner. Both dogs get extra treats. Everyone wins!

🍖 Treat Guidelines

  • Use pea-sized treats only — training treats, not meal-sized ones.
  • Limit to 10–15 treats per session for small dogs, 15–20 for medium/large dogs.
  • Take breaks every 15–20 minutes. Offer water between rounds.
  • Swap half the treats for low-calorie alternatives: carrot pieces, blueberries, cucumber.
  • Stop if your dog seems tired, distracted, or loses interest. Training should always be fun!
  • Consult your vet if your dog is on a special diet or has food allergies.
  • Verbal praise + petting counts as a reward — not every success needs a food treat.

🐾 Golden Rules

Always end on a success — if your dog struggles, simplify the challenge. Never repeat a failed challenge more than twice in a row. Keep sessions to 15–20 minutes max. Training should be a happy, stress-free experience for both of you. When in doubt, take a break, offer a treat, and come back tomorrow!

🎮 How To Play
Quick-start guide — printable version included in the download
1

🖨️ Print & Prep

Print your card sheets on cardstock and cut them out. Separate into four piles by difficulty: Easy (green), Medium (yellow), Hard (red), and Bonus (purple). Shuffle each pile separately. Grab your dog's favorite small treats, a timer, and your score sheet.

2

🐶 Warm Up Your Dog

Before drawing any cards, give your dog a 2-minute warm-up: a short walk, a few sit/stand repetitions, or a quick play session. This gets their focus and energy going — a ready dog is a successful dog!

3

🃏 Draw a Card

The active player draws the top card from their chosen difficulty pile. Read the card aloud: the challenge title, description, time limit, and point value. Everyone knows what's coming — including the dog (kind of)!

4

⏱️ Attempt the Challenge

Start your timer and give the challenge a go! You may use treats, toys, or verbal encouragement to help your dog succeed. The goal is completion within the time limit shown on the card. Partial attempts don't score — but they're still great training!

5

✅ Score & Reward

If the challenge is completed within time: record the points on your score sheet and give your dog a treat and lots of praise! If it's not completed: no points, but say "Good try!" and give a gentle pat anyway. Positive energy always wins.

6

🔄 Next Player's Turn

Pass the draw to the next player (in multiplayer). In single-player, draw your next card. After every 5 cards drawn, take a 3-minute break: water break for the dog, stretch for the human, and a little cuddle moment. 🤗

7

⭐ Play a Bonus Card

Bonus cards are wild — roll a die when you draw one! The die multiplies your points: Roll 1–2 = ×1, Roll 3–4 = ×2, Roll 5 = ×3, Roll 6 = ×4 (jackpot!). Bonus challenges are silly and fun — expect laughter. These are the crowd favorites!

8

🏆 Count Up & Celebrate

At the end of the game, tally everyone's points. The highest score wins! But truly — every dog who participated is a winner. Award a final treat to every dog, a big round of applause, and plan your next Dog Challenge Cards session!

💡 Pro Tips

🐾 Never push a tired or stressed dog — end the game early if needed.
🐾 Start new players on Easy-only sessions until their dog gets comfortable.
🐾 Puppies under 12 months: skip Hard cards entirely.
🐾 Some challenges allow modifications — adapt to your dog's abilities.
🐾 The most important rule: if the dog is having fun, you're winning! 🎉
